All This Alice Merch Is Driving Us Mad! MAD, I SAY!
And more Alice/Wonderland/Through The Looking Glass comes rolling in! Hot Topic just released their Alice: Through The Looking Glass Collection and it looks...pretty decent.
In typical "nerdy girl" fashion, there are A LOT of skater style dresses (ho-hum), but there are a few items that manage to stand out.
Alice Mad Hatter Waist Vest - Super cute! I love the red lining and the button details to give it a very structured, almost corseted type of look. That said, unless the lining inside the vest has some sort of "Alice" detailing, this is more of a general steampunk vibe than specifically "Alice" (outside of the blonde model they're using).
Still, it looks decently made. Though, I do think the more important question is, WHERE CAN I FIND THAT PEACH BLOUSE W/ THE CRAVAT! The blouse is what really sells this piece. If you can, try to track something similar to it down to wear w/ this ensemble (I don't believe it's available through the Hot Topic site). The skirt in this photo looks cheap, so hopefully it's not attached and something I would recommend you pass on. Some flamboyant velvet leggings might look nice instead.
In all honesty, what really sold me on this collection was the men's line. With the exception of that bucket-sized top hat, the guy's looks are stellar, reminding me less of the Mad Hatter and more like Velvet Goldmine's young Brian Slade (which I guess, it could be argued, is pretty much one and the same).
Ladies, I HIGHLY recommend you ditch those crap dresses they're trying to push on you and test out the menswear waters for a bit.
Mad Hatter's Guy's Vest - Again, remember this is only for the vest. The blouse and scarf/tie are not available on the site. Because of this, I urge you to take a good hard look at what you're actually buying. The Mad Hatter guy's vest DOES have a subtle Mad Hatter top hat pattern printed on the cloth and I always appreciate those type of details. However, what I think is more important here is The Look.
You could easily put this all together with clothes you might already have within your closet, find for cheaper in the guy's section at the mall, or just hunt down some guys wear at thrift store and get fitted at a tailors (I can NOT recommend enough about getting things tailored to fit you properly. It's like creating a whole new customized wardrobe).
If you're intent on having this specific collection though, here's my fave look out of the whole lot!
Love, love, LOVE everything about this. Done simply enough - black skinny jeans, pink dress shirt, loose paisley scarf and, specifically, the Mad Hatter guy's vest and jacket.
The Mad Hatter Guy's Jacket looks good enough (although on the site it looks more like a cardigan than a jacket ) and at $79.50 is a decent deal (unless it is just a cardigan, in which case - no). There is some looped detailing around the cuffs which is a nice touch.
Currently, the collection is only available as pre-order online, but will find it's way to stores eventually. For a full rundown and info, hit up Amy Ratcliff's write-up on it over on Nerdist.com.
